Chinese GuaSha (刮痧)

Gua sha is a traditional healing method from Traditional Chinese Medicine that uses a smooth tool to scrape the skin. It aims to improve blood flow, ease muscle tension, and clear blocked energy, known as Qi.

Body Gua Sha (Traditional)

  • Goal: Relieve severe pain, stiffness, and deep muscle tension in the back, neck, or shoulders.
  • Technique: Uses firm pressure with tools made of stone, horn, or metal.
  • Effect: Breaks tiny blood vessels under the skin to create temporary red or purple marks called sha, which fade in a few days.

Facial Gua Sha (Modern Cosmetic)

  • Goal: Reduce facial puffiness, contour the skin, and boost circulation.
  • Technique: Uses very gentle, light pressure with jade, rose quartz, or stainless steel tools alongside a facial oil.
  • Effect: Smooths upward and outward across the face and neck without bruising the skin.

Benifits and Safety

  • Pain Relief: Helps ease chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain.
  • Better Blood Flow: Increases circulation and lowers inflammation in targeted areas.
  • Relaxation: Relieves tight muscles and tension.
  • Side Effects: Leaves temporary bruising, discoloration, or mild soreness.
  • When to Avoid: Do not use on open wounds, sunburns, active skin rashes, or if you take blood-thinning medicines.
